Twelve new pastors within their first three years of ordination convened at Camp Pinerock in Prescott, AZ, from April 8-10, 2024, for the First Call Theological Education event. This gathering, a boon for the Grand Canyon Synod, featured pastors from diverse congregations across the region, including New Promise Lutheran in Utah, New Song in Nevada, Phoenix metro churches, and Our Saviour’s in Tucson, AZ. They engaged in 20 hours of intensive learning with Rev. Sunitha Mortha of the Chicago Metropolitan Synod, who enlightened them on critical topics such as the distinctions between mission, vision, strategy, and planning. Their fresh perspectives and vibrant energy promise to invigorate their communities with innovative approaches to worship and ministry. Bishop Deborah and Pastor Jacqui eagerly anticipate further discussions with these pastors and newly ordained deacons this fall at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center.
