A Cup of Generosity: December, 2022

"When you give to the needy do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing." Matthew 6:3

It occurred to me the other day as I was trying to work with a budget app that my daughters had talked me into, that sooner or later your left hand is going to figure out what your right hand is doing.

A Cup of Generosity: October, 2022

“We should look to see what God is doing in our lives but with the knowledge that God isn't out to get us but God is there to guide us, comfort us, perhaps sometimes to challenge us but always to be leading us in the right direction and caring for us along the way.”

A Cup of Generosity: August, 2022

I read an article the other day that suggested that generosity is an early sign of Alzheimer’s. My first reaction was to laugh, because I have often told people that God has early Alzheimer’s. I say that because it tells us in the psalms that God not only forgives our sins, but also forgets them. That is one way that God is generous to us. And that is a good thing.

After I stopped laughing however, I decided that this is something I should think about seriously. Read more in this post or view as PDF.

A Cup of Generosity: July, 2022

“Has all this inflation made you nervous and maybe made you think about pulling in and not being quite so generous so that you will have enough for yourself? A Cup of Generosity: A stewardship plan for 2022

The best stewardship campaign I ever planned was not done in the fall, but over Lent. I am writing this now in case anyone wants to think about doing it next spring.

About New Year’s I asked people to begin thinking about the most generous person they knew and to write a short story about what they had observed about that person that made them think that way.

A Cup of Generosity: How to give when feeling overwhelmed

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. —Matthew 6:3

Do you ever feel like neither your left or right hand know what to do about giving? Do you ever feel overwhelmed with all the needs in the world and all the requests for money and help that you get knowing you don’t have the resources to help them all?

A Cup of Generosity: Not just about money

Generosity is not just about our money. It is an attitude. It is a way of viewing the world. I was sitting watching the news and bemoaning the fate of the Afghans who had supported the US and their possible fate. Like for most people it brought me memories of the fall of South Vietnam and the plight of those who had aided the US.

A Cup of Generosity: Giving opens our hearts to breathe in the Spirit

Before I was a pastor, I was a pediatric intensive care nurse. I remember the the first time I saw a gray and sickly baby turn pink before my eyes as an ECMO machine started doing its job.

This is my metaphor for what tithing does for us. Tithing opens our hearts enough to let the love flow freely. And perhaps as with ECMO, it hooks us up to breathe in the Spirit.
