Rev. Stephen Springer

Nominee for Synod Secretary

Life Experiences:

“My appreciation and love for the congregations, people, and mission of the Grand Canyon Synod is based upon my sixteen years as a pastor in this synod. Among other experiences in these years, I served as the Dean of the Santa Cruz Conference from 2012 through 2017, which deepened my understanding of the diversity of perspectives, problems, and opportunities that we face. Earlier in my time here, I was appointed to serve on the team that introduced Evangelical Lutheran Worship in Phoenix, Tucson, and Las Vegas.

Some of the things that have prepared me specifically for the work of synod secretary have been my leadership with the Reference and Counsel Committee (“resolutions committee”) both in this synod for many years, and in the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod prior to my call to the Grand Canyon Synod. I also was appointed to chair the elections committee in the Gulf Coast Synod. Those experiences taught me a great deal about the importance of careful attention to both the procedures and the equity of our collective deliberations and decision-making.

I recently finished seven years on the board of a non-profit workforce development agency in Tucson (Jobpath, Inc.) where I served one term as board president, and twice as the vice-president in charge of governance. In the early part of the 21sth century, I served as board secretary for the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge. These experiences have also expanded my understanding of governance and the importance of procedures that are transparent, equitable, public, and understandable.”

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
